Programme

Piano Trio, D 28 in B flat by Schubert ( 1797 – 1828 )

This work was written when Schubert was 15 year’s old and was presumably planned as a sonata movement with others to follow. However it is not known for any other movements to have been written and it was only recently that this work has taken to the concert platforms. In the music we can enjoy a youthful Schubert – no tragic nuances or sorrows, but already plenty to suggest the master of song and beautifully crafted structures.

Duo for violin and cello, op. 7 by Kodaly ( 1882 – 1967 )

Kodaly is one of the most prominent composers and educators of the 20th century. For a time he was a minister of Culture in Hungary and thus he was able to establish a unique educational singing programme for the school curriculum which embraced classical popular and folk music in equal measure and was to spread across the border into all eastern European states. The choir and music aural training were an essential part thereafter in all schools for many decades.

The Duo for violin and cello is highly original early work ( 1914 ). It was first performed in Salzburg. It has a Sonata structure in 3 movements.

  1. Allegro serioso,non troppo
  2. Adagio
  3. Maestoso e largamente – Presto

 INTERVAL

Piano Trio in E minor op.90 “Dumky” by Dvorak ( 1841 – 1904 )

Dvorak is without a doubt one of the most fruitful and inventive composers of the second half of the Romantic era. He was personally acquainted with Wagner, Liszt, Brahms and other prominent composers of his time. His music was deeply connected in body and soul with the Bohemian and the Czech traditions. From these he drew profound inspiration just like his predecessor Smetana.

Dumky is the last of 4 piano trios. It has six movements – each of them part of the eloquent music story following the great Russian tradition of Dumka ( story narration - live)

The movements are relatively independent but also share some textural material and motives. The characters, rhythms and dramatic developments are unique.

  1. Lento maestoso – Allegro quasi doppio movimento – Lento – Allegro
  2. Poco Adagio – Vivace non tropo – Poco Adagio – Vivace
  3. Andante – Vivace non troppo – Andante
  4. Andante moderato – Allegretto acherzando – Meno mosso – Allegro-Moderato
  5. Allegro
  6. Lento maestoso – Vivace – Lento - Vivace
