VIVALDI
(1678-1741)
Nine authentic sonatas for violoncello by Antonio Vivaldi survive. We find that in these sonatas, Vivaldi responded to the sonority of the cello and freed it from its more common role as a bass line instrument. In doing so, he was inspired to write music which seems to carry a little more depth and harmonic richness than the better known violin sonatas. This can be heard especially in the second Largo of the work.
