Calendar of Concerts 2017-18
These are the forthcoming concerts for the 2017-18 season, all taking place in the Market Hall in Appleby and starting at 7:30pm. For your own illustrated copy of the concert dates to print off and put on your notice board at home, click HERE. You might also like to help us by printing one or two off and displaying them in a suitably prominent position in your community - that would be greatly appreciated.
Who's in the line-up this season?
- We've pushed the boat out this year and are bringing you not five, but six concerts. We did the same last season, but that was to redress the loss of one concert the previous season to Storm Desmond. But six concerts span the period nicely and we hope you will all enjoy the bonus and have time in your busy lives to come and support us.
- Sunday 24th September 2017 7:30pm- Richard Durrant (Guitar) - Stringhenge. Our season opener sees the return of truly gifted guitarist Richard Durrant who last appeared here a couple of seasons ago with harpsichordist Howard Beech. This evening he'll be presenting his one-man show which draws upon the resonances of ancient Britain. A 5,000 year old bog oak has surrendered its heart to be made into the guitar he'll be playing for this concert - will there ever be a stronger link with a neolithic past? It's well worth poking around Richard's own website, starting with his portrayal of what lies behind Stringhenge HERE.
- Sunday 5th November 2017 7:30pm - EVVA & EMMA DUO. Evva Mizerska (cello) and Emma Abbate (piano) bring an interesting programme of European music for this pairing which is guaranteed to stimulate and enrapture in equal measures. Evva and Emma manage to dovetail busy teaching careers with recording and performing schedules as soloists and chamber musicians both in the UK and overseas.
- Sunday 3rd December 2017 7:30pm - JOHN LAW - The Goldberg Project Labelled by none other than the great Alfred Brendel "a gifted maverick", John Law will be presenting his project based upon JS Bach's wonderful Goldberg Variations. A classical / jazz / film crossover work, he is taking it on a tour of the major classical concert halls of Europe and Japan. And Appleby. It's too easy to pigeon-hole musical preferences and musical markers - this concert will have you looking for the new pigeon-hole that we've specially commissioned - constructed out of the spruce wood from the back of an old Stradivarius cello, as it happens. But we've not yet worked out what to label it. Please share any ideas for its name after the concert.
- Sunday 28th January 2018 7:30pm - THE DELTA PIANO TRIO. Based in Holland, the Delta Piano Trio (Piano/violin/cello) tour the world with their 6 ears, 6 hands and 94 strings and, at the time of writing are about to undertake a busy concert programme in China. Their second Naxos CD will be appearing in November and so we shall expect them to arrive with good stocks of both on the night.
- Sunday 25th February 2018 7:30pm - TOBY CARR (Lute & Theorbo) GWEN MARTIN (Soprano) - bewitching songs of the 17th century.. For those who missed the gorgeous Dowland Works concert which closed our concert programme last season, this duo will present another opportunity to savour the beautiful songs of the 17th century as penned by Henry Purcell, John Dowland, Claudio Monteverdi and other contemproaries, including that redoubtable composer Anon.
- Sunday 25th March 2018 7:30pm - TRAVELLING BY TUBA. Duo Chris Cranham (Tuba) and Stewart Death (Piano) cram in an astonishing 200+ concerts a year which includes an imaginative education programme that they take into schools across the land. For this season-closer, TBT will be taking the audience on a global tour through time and you may wish to keep a note and count of the instruments paraded before you as the evening flashes by.
NOTE: Programme information is often garnered well ahead of a concert and sometimes, as we all know, the best laid plans of mice and men oft gang agley...and so, whilst given in good faith, programmes sometimes do change for a variety of reasons. If we have prior knowledge, we shall use this website to communicate any such change but the organisers are not able to accept liability for said change if it occurs.
